Steps

At the accident scene

  1. 1

    Protect people and the scene

If anyone is injured or killed, remain at the scene, do what you can to prevent further danger and notify police. Do not alter the scene except where necessary for assistance or safety.

  2. 2

Determine whether a police investigation is needed

Police always investigate where there are injuries or fatalities and in other prescribed cases, for example if a participant leaves, alcohol or drugs are suspected, or you expressly request it. Do not try to determine liability yourself.

  3. 3

For material damage only, move vehicles if safe

Where possible, immediately move vehicles from the carriageway and allow traffic to proceed. Do not leave before completing and signing a European Accident Statement or otherwise exchanging personal and vehicle data.

  4. 4

    Record facts and exchange information

Photograph vehicle positions, damage and relevant traces where safe. Record the other driver's details, registration, insurer, policy and witnesses. The European Accident Statement records facts; signing it is not an admission of liability.

  5. 5

    Notify the appropriate insurer

For damage caused by a Croatian-registered vehicle, a claim is generally submitted to the responsible vehicle's insurer. For an unknown, uninsured or foreign vehicle, check HUO's official instructions before submitting a claim.

  • The European Accident Statement is not completed or a copy is not retained.
  • Signing the European Accident Statement is assumed to mean admitting liability.
  • A claim is reported to the wrong body for an unknown, uninsured or foreign vehicle.
