How to apply

This procedure has one application method.

Steps

    Check the reason and deadline for replacement

    If the card has expired, is damaged or your details have changed, apply for a new one within 15 days.

    Choose the production time

    Choose the regular, accelerated or urgent procedure based on how soon you need the new card.

  3. 3

    Prepare the documents

    Prepare the previous identity card, a photo if needed, and proof of payment if you are not paying by card.

  4. 4

    Submit the application

    Submit the application in person at a police administration or station that handles administrative matters.

  5. 5

    Sign the agreement and provide fingerprints

    When applying, you sign the certification-services agreement and provide index-finger fingerprints.

    Collect the new identity card

    Collect the card and security envelope at the police administration or station where you applied.

  7. 7

    Activate the electronic part

    To use electronic functions, activate the eID card and change the initial password and PIN.

Important notes

  • After expiry, a change of personal data or registered address, serious damage, or a significant change of appearance, apply for a new identity card within 15 days.
  • If your name or personal identification number changes, request revocation or suspension of certificates within two days.
  • You can apply through the regular procedure at least 30 days before the existing card expires to retain a continuously valid document.
  • Collect the completed identity card no later than 90 days after the production deadline; otherwise it will be cancelled.
  • For seriously ill, elderly or immobile people, police may arrange to receive an application on site in justified cases by prior agreement.

Common mistakes

  • The application is not submitted within 15 days of expiry, changed details or damage.
  • The previous identity card is not brought when applying.
  • The payment uses the wrong personal identification number for the person receiving the card.
  • Proof of payment by online banking is not printed.
  • The completed identity card is not collected within the prescribed period.
  • The security envelope is lost before the eID card's electronic part is activated.
