Steps

In person

  1. 1

Report the disappearance to police immediately

Report a loss, theft or suspected misuse at the nearest police administration or station. Also report finding the card.

  2. 2

    Suspend certificates immediately if needed

If you use the electronic part of the eID card, you can request certificate suspension on the My eID portal. This does not replace the mandatory police report.

  3. 3

Choose the production time for a new card

Choose the regular, accelerated or urgent procedure based on how soon you need the new card.

  4. 4

    Prepare the new-card application

Prepare another photo document if you have one, a photo if needed, and proof of payment if you are not paying by card.

  5. 5

    Apply in person

Submit the new identity-card application at a police administration or station that handles administrative matters.

  6. 6

    Collect the new identity card

Collect the card and security envelope at the police administration or station where you applied.

Important notes

  • Report disappearance, suspected misuse and finding the card without delay. Late reporting is an offence.
  • Once reported missing, the card becomes invalid and suspension of its certificates begins.
  • There is no 15-day deadline to apply for a new card after loss or theft; that deadline applies to other reasons for replacement. However, an adult with registered residence in Croatia must hold a valid identity card.
  • If the card is found within eight days of certificate suspension, report the finding so the certificates can become valid again. After eight days they are automatically revoked.
  • If your card is lost or stolen abroad, report it to the nearest Croatian diplomatic mission or consular office and to police in the country where it happened.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting several days before reporting the disappearance or not reporting that the card was found.
  • Mistakenly treating online certificate suspension as a substitute for a police report.
  • Trying to use a card after it has been reported missing.
  • Not bringing another public photo document when applying for a new card, despite having one.
  • Travelling abroad after losing an identity card with only proof of application, which is not a travel document.
