Steps

With help from the assigned school

  1. 1

Check whether your child is of compulsory school age

Regular enrolment is compulsory for a child who has turned six by 1 April of the current year. You may request early enrolment for a younger child who meets statutory conditions.

  2. 2

    Check annual deadlines

The competent administrative department, City of Zagreb and schools publish application deadlines and examination schedules. Do not rely on dates from the previous year.

  3. 3

    Contact the assigned school

The school checks details, enters the application into the system for you and gives instructions for the next steps.

  4. 4

Choose the school and available programmes

Confirm the assigned school and choose offered options such as elective subjects or extended stay. You can also express an interest in another school in the system.

  5. 5

    Confirm the enrolment application

Review entered details, attach requested additional documentation and check that the application was submitted successfully.

  6. 6

    Complete the school-doctor examination

Book an appointment according to local instructions. The school-medicine doctor assesses the child’s health as part of enrolment.

  7. 7

Bring the child to the school assessment

The school’s expert committee assesses the child’s psychophysical condition and readiness to start first grade.

  8. 8

    Confirm the enrolment form

After the school approves enrolment, download the form from the system, sign it and upload it to complete the procedure.

Important notes

  • Application in the system is not the only step: the child must complete the school-doctor examination and the school expert committee’s assessment.
  • Deadlines are published for each school year and can differ by application type.
  • A request for a school outside the assigned enrolment area does not guarantee that the child will be admitted there.
  • Early enrolment may be requested only for a child who will turn six by 31 December of the current year.
  • The expert committee proposes postponement and it may be approved only once, for one school year.
  • A parent without an e-Citizens credential should contact the assigned school so it can enter the application into the system.

Common mistakes

  • Missing the annual deadline by relying on dates from the previous school year.
  • Not checking the child’s details or assigned enrolment area before confirming the application.
  • Assuming the online application completes the entire procedure and not booking examinations.
  • Submitting the application without checking it was successfully received in the system.
  • Not downloading, signing or uploading the enrolment form after approval.
  • Treating a preference for another school as automatically approved admission.
