Renewing vehicle registration

• This guide concerns annual renewal of a vehicle already registered in Croatia, not first registration or a change of owner.
• The total cost is not the same for all vehicles; it depends on technical characteristics, age, insurance, charges and possible exemptions.
• The procedure cannot be completed entirely online; the owner or authorised person must attend with the vehicle and registration certificate.
• New passenger vehicles normally undergo their first regular technical inspection 24 months after first registration, then every 12 months. Used vehicles are inspected every 12 months.
• If a vehicle fails inspection, the first repeat general inspection within 15 days is free. A repeat emissions test in that period costs 50% of the full fee.

• Arriving without the registration certificate or proof of identity.
• Mandatory insurance is not arranged or renewed before renewing the registration certificate.
• Assuming the whole procedure can be completed online.
• Not preparing the vehicle for checks of lights, tyres, brakes, safety equipment and other parts.
• Missing the 15-day deadline for a cheaper repeat inspection after failing technical inspection.
• Estimating total cost only from the inspection price, without insurance and other prescribed obligations.
