Steps

In person at the registry office

  1. 1

Check whether birth was reported to the registrar

A healthcare institution reports a birth occurring there; special reporters and evidence apply for birth outside an institution.

  2. 2

Choose the registry office or e-Newborn

The online procedure requires an activated electronic identity card and technical conditions for electronic signing.

  3. 3

Choose the child’s first and last name

Parents must choose the child’s name within 30 days of birth.

  4. 4

    Confirm registrations and related applications

Alongside civil-register registration, you can arrange residence, health insurance, state support and a tax-card change.

Important notes

  • The healthcare institution or another authorised person reports the fact of birth within 15 days.
  • Parents must choose the child’s name within 30 days of birth.
  • Local newborn support depends on the city, municipality or county and is not automatically the same as state support.
  • Birth outside a healthcare institution requires additional medical documentation or proof of maternity.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the maternity ward’s notification completed all parental registrations and applications.
  • Not checking the User Inbox after using e-Newborn.
  • Confusing local financial assistance with state lump-sum support.
  • Not activating electronic identity-card certificates for the online procedure.
