Steps

In person or by another permitted method

  1. 1

Distinguish urgent care while travelling from planned treatment

An EHIC does not cover travel whose purpose is treatment.

  2. 2

    Determine which legal route applies

Treatment unavailable in Croatia may be referred under national rules. If it is available but not within a medically justified period, cross-border healthcare rules apply for the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the UK.

  3. 3

    Obtain a medical proposal

The competent doctors explain the need for treatment and circumstances relevant to approval.

  4. 4

Request HZZO approval before committing to costs

For HZZO-funded cover, follow the decision and conditions of the applicable legal route.

  5. 5

    Act on the decision

Check the institution, scope of cover, transport and post-treatment obligations, as routes do not cover the same costs.

Important notes

  • An EHIC is not approval for planned treatment.
  • Paying independently does not guarantee later reimbursement.

Common mistakes

  • Booking the trip before HZZO's decision.
  • Not checking what the approval covers.
