    Determine the reason and deregistration deadline

    The deadline depends on registration expiry, destruction, write-off, theft or change of ownership.

    Prepare documents and plates

    Bring the registration certificate, both plates, identification and required proof concerning the vehicle.

    Deregister the vehicle at an inspection station

    You can complete the procedure in person or through a duly authorised person.

    Collect confirmation and retain documentation

    Check that deregistration is recorded and keep proof that the procedure was completed.

Important notes

  • If you do not renew registration, deregister the vehicle within 15 days of expiry of the registration certificate.
  • For a destroyed, written-off or stolen vehicle, the official source states a 30-day deadline.
  • A new owner must register the vehicle in their name or deregister it within 15 days.

Common mistakes

  • Not bringing both licence plates for deregistration.
  • Not preparing a treatment certificate or storage-location declaration where required.
  • Assuming a vehicle is automatically deregistered immediately after sale.
