Steps

In person, by post or through an employer

  1. 1

Check compulsory insurance and possible exemptions

A supplementary policy complements compulsory health insurance; check whether you are entitled to a state-budget-funded premium.

  2. 2

    Complete the offer

Enter the requested personal details, choose a payment method and sign the offer.

  3. 3

    Deliver the offer to HZZO

Submit it in person, send it by post or deliver it through an employer.

  4. 4

    Check the coverage start date

Do not rely on coverage before the prescribed waiting period stated in the policy has ended.

HZZO supplementary-insurance premium

From 1 February 2026, the premium is EUR 15 per month or EUR 180 per year, unless it is paid from the state budget.

€15.00Usually after a 15-day waiting period

Important notes

  • Supplementary insurance is not a replacement for compulsory health insurance.
  • A new policy generally does not cover co-payments immediately, but after the waiting period.
  • Conditions for a state-budget-funded policy depend on the legal basis and can change.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the policy takes effect when the offer is submitted.
  • Not checking the insurance start date on the policy.
  • Missing a change in premium or payment method because HZZO notices are not followed.
